Description

Created in 1998, the international L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program aims to improve the position of women in science by recognizing outstanding women researchers who have contributed to scientific progress, and young women scientists engaged in exemplary and promising projects. The Canadian program, launched in 2003, recognizes promising woman researchers at the doctoral and postdoctoral level.

As an extension of this program, NSERC and L'Oréal Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, offer one $10,000 supplement annually to a woman involved in a promising research project who has been awarded an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF), and who has demonstrated exemplary involvement in science promotion, mentorship, and leadership.

Eligibility

To hold this supplement, you must:

  • be a woman
  • be awarded, and accept, an NSERC PDF
  • take up the NSERC PDF award in Canada
  • be invited to apply for the NSERC and L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science supplement

Supplement value

NSERC and L’Oréal Canada will supplement the successful candidate’s NSERC PDF award by $10,000 ($5,000 from NSERC and $5,000 from L’Oréal Canada) for one year. One supplement is offered annually.

Application procedures

The top-scoring woman candidate from each Scholarships and Fellowships Selection Committee who is awarded and accepts an NSERC PDF will be invited via email, starting in March, to apply for the NSERC and L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science supplement. If you receive and accept the invitation, you will be sent a secure submission site link, where you can submit your application. The application will consist of:

  • a one- to two-page summary describing your: (i) career goals; (ii) academic research in lay terms (200 words maximum); and (iii) extracurricular activities that demonstrate your interest and involvement in science promotion and mentorship and leadership skills*
  • a letter of support from your current supervisor describing why you are suitable for this supplement and giving testimony to your abilities as described in your summary
  • a signed copy of the terms and conditions of applying form

Links to websites (if applicable) may be included to demonstrate involvement in science promotion.

Your application must be submitted to NSERC before 8:00 pm (ET) on the deadline date. Late applications will not be accepted.

Selection process

Applications will be evaluated by a committee composed of representatives from NSERC, L’Oréal Canada and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. Priority will be given to candidates who, through their experience, have demonstrated their willingness and aptitudes for sharing their passion for science.

Notification of results

You will be notified of the outcome of your supplement application during the month of June.

NSERC may publish the supplement recipient’s name (and other basic award information) on its website. For more information, read the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act (ATIP).

Promotion purposes for the recipient

The supplement recipient will be invited to attend the annual awards ceremony for the L’Oréal Canada For Women in Science program, supported by the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. The ceremony will be held in Ottawa in November (date to be confirmed). Travel fees will be covered by L’Oréal Canada.

The recipient may also be invited to participate in the L’Oréal Canada For Girls in Science program, with the support of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. This program aims to improve the attractiveness of careers in the sciences and inspire scientific vocation, especially in teenage girls.

The L’Oréal Canada For Girls in Science program, launched in Canada in 2017 in collaboration with the UNESCO Associated Schools Network, focuses on mobilizing grant-holders from the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program to lead sessions in UNESCO Associated Schools Network schools (grades 8 to 12).

Moreover, L’Oréal Canada and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO may occasionally wish to make public (for the purposes of publicity and promotion) selected information regarding award recipients. This information may include, but is not limited to, the recipient’s name, her past and current career and research activities related to science, including place of employment and title, along with a picture of the recipient in her workplace, her current educational institution, the institution where she intends to take up the award, and the field of research funded by the award. By accepting the supplement, the recipient gives her consent to the collection, use or disclosure of her personal information related to her activities under the auspices of the supplement (as described above) to L’Oréal Canada and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.

Payment

NSERC and L’Oréal Canada will each issue a $5,000 payment to the successful candidate. The payment can only be made once the recipient has activated her NSERC PDF award.

Refer to the Payment of award section of the Tri-agency research training award holder’s guide for more information on PDF award payments.
