2020 NSERC Synergy Awards for Innovation

Dr. Ludvik Martinu and Dr. Jolanta E. Klemberg-Sapieha founded the Functional Coating and Surface Engineering Laboratory (FCSEL) at Polytechnique Montréal in 1996, with a mission to collaborate with industry partners and to develop novel surface engineering processes and new specialized materials. Their activities are advancing sustainable surface engineering solutions for industries in Canada and around the world. Martinu and Klemberg-Sapieha’s collaboration with Essilor, a leader in the fabrication of eyeglass lenses, has resulted in more durable and protective lenses, helping improve people’s vision. Joining forces with Velan, a leading manufacturer of industrial valves, the FCSEL researchers have contributed to better performance and higher durability and efficiency of valve components. Their collaboration with Guardian Industries, a major producer of architectural glass and glazing, has contributed to the development of low-emissivity windows and smart windows for energy saving in the building and automobile sectors.

These researchers have also established strong partnerships with aerospace industry leaders to advance protective coatings for aircraft components. Their projects with Pratt & Whitney Canada, MDS Coating Technologies and Safran have produced pioneering work developing erosion- and oxidation-resistant and ice phobic coatings for aircraft engine components that give rise to better performing, longer-lasting engine parts and increased safety for pilots and passengers.

In recognition of innovative contributions to the surface engineering field and collaborations with industry, Dr. Ludvik Martinu and Dr. Jolanta E. Klemberg-Sapieha are awarded a 2020 NSERC Synergy Award for Innovation.
