J. Kevin Vessey

Dr. J. Kevin Vessey (Ph.D. Biology, Queen's University; M.Sc. and B.Sc. Honours Biology, Dalhousie University) is an award-winning biologist and Professor of Plant Biology at Saint Mary’s University. He previously served as the university’s Dean of Graduate Studies and Associate Vice President of Research for 12 years. He has also held positions at the University of Manitoba, North Carolina State University, and at the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique, France.

Dr. Vessey’s research area is plant physiology, with a particular focus on beneficial plant-microbe interactions, and the optimizing of crops as biofuel feedstocks. He has an expert understanding of primary biochemical pathways, integrative cell structure and function, tissue organization and function, and related areas. Dr. Vessey has published over 80 scholarly articles, co-edited one book, holds one patent and has trained over 50 undergraduate/graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.

He has served on many regional, national, and international boards and advisory committees and currently holds a leadership position in BioFuelNet Canada, a Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE) that brings together the Canadian biofuels research community. He is a former member and Chair of the Discovery Accelerator Supplements Sections Committee-Natural Sciences, a former member and Co-Chair of the Plant Biology and Food Science Grant Selection Committee (1999-2002), and a former member and Chair of the NSERC Atlantic Advisory Committee (2010-2014). Dr. Vessey has also served on the boards of the Canadian Association of Graduate Studies, the Atlantic Environmental Sciences Network, the Offshore Energy Research Association, and Plant Inoculants Canada.

Dr. Vessey is a member of NSERC’s Committee on Discovery Research.
