Chairholders
Profile
Christian B. Schlegel
Electrical and Computer Engineering
Dalhousie University
Chair title
NSERC /Ultra Electronics Maritime Systems Industrial Research Chair in Wireless Information Transmission and Networking
Chair program
Industrial Research Chairs program
Role
Senior Chairholder since 2012
Summary
The purpose of this chair is the design, study, prototyping, and test implementations of reliable digital data communications systems and algorithms over radio wireless, acoustic, and magneto-inductive communications channels; and the theoretical study of the underlying mathematical and physical principles. The chair will also address the efficient implementation of such systems in FPGA and VLSI technology, providing accelerated know-how transfer and think-tank services to the supporting industries. Apart from training highly-qualified personnel this chair also takes an active role in closing the gap between academic research and industrial applications.
With communications technologies being a key enabler of industrial growth and scientific progress, the activities of this chair will have widespread importance in local and national circles by training human resources, developing novel modern communications principles, and enabling Canadian industries to successfully apply the most up-to-date technologies.
The chair holder, Professor Schlegel, is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and has many years of experience in the field of digital communications and information processing. He is widely recognized as a leading expert in error control coding and multiple access technologies, and has previously led large research programs in the US, Australia, and Alberta, Canada. He will work closely with the main industrial partners of this program, the initiating partner, Ultra Electronics Maritime Systems in Halifax, and the co-partner TELUS Corporation. Both companies are rapidly growing in different sectors of the communications systems market, which will be the main focus of this research chair.
