Senior Chairholder since 2018

Summary

Electrified vehicles–which include hybrid, battery electric, plug-in hybrid electric, and fuel cell vehicles–will be critical in helping Canada lower emissions, reduce fossil fuel use, and mitigate climate change. The next generation of electrified vehicles will require improved cost-effective powertrains and powertrain components.

This Industrial Research Chair (IRC) will investigate improvements to increase the sophistication and accuracy of models used to develop next-generation electrified powertrain (EPT) systems and components. Specifically, these will include improving multi-disciplinary models of EPTs with electrically variable transmissions; predicting electromagnetic interference of power electronic converters before the prototype development stage; enhancing analytical noise, loss, and temperature models for electric traction motors; and developing techniques for real-time traction motor control that will estimate loss, temperature and acoustic noise.

This research program will help engineers at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles improve their modelling capabilities, which will result in more sophisticated models, algorithms and development tools. These, in turn, will enable Fiat Chrysler to design higher-quality prototypes more quickly and deliver cost-effective EPTs that are more powerful, efficient and reliable. Improved EPTs will help accelerate the development of more affordable and efficient hybrid and electric vehicles, which will help lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.
